At the European Grid Conference high-level decision-makers constituting grid operators and members of civil society, industry and politics convene annually in Brussels. Major societal, political and technological developments in the electricity sector are discussed. It was initiated in 2011 by the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI).
The Renewables Grid Initiative is a unique collaboration of environmental NGOs and transmission system operators from across Europe that promotes transparent, environmentally sensitive grid development to enable the further steady growth of renewable energy and the energy transition.
RGI members originate from a variety of European countries, as it consists of TSOs from Belgium (Elia), France (RTE), Germany (Amprion, 50Hertz and TenneT), Netherlands (TenneT), Spain (Red Eléctrica) Switzerland (Swissgrid), Norway (Statnett) and Italy (Terna), as well as NGOs such as BirdLife Europe, the Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, Germanwatch, Legambiente, Natuur&Milieu, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and WWF International. RGI was launched in July 2009.
